Late last night, Nintendo issued a statement explaining why company president Satoru Iwata has been out of commission for the last few weeks.
According to the statement, Iwata had been diagnosed with a bile duct growth, a condition that can be incredibly serious unless treated early. Iwata had surgery performed to remove the growth and fortunately appears to recovering well.
While Iwata has missed E3 and will be missing the company’s Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, it seems like he’s slowly getting back to business, handling management of the company “by email and other means.” Still, Iwata writes, “it is anticipated that a little more time is needed for me to return to my regular work schedule.”
Although I’ve never met Iwata in person, he’s always seemed like a sincere and genuine person. I really enjoy his presence in the Nintendo Direct broadcasts, and his passion for what he does is made apparent each and every time he’s on-screen.
Get well soon, Iwata! Here’s to a full and speedy recovery.
